Revised

It's a while ago that I posted here on my base-weblog. I am to busy with my daily haiku meme Carpe Diem so sometimes by lack of time I don't post here. Today I was re-reading my first English haiku and I love to share a revised one.

This was my first haiku in English ever, I wrote it in 2005 and it became a wellknown haiku. It's even part of a worldwide anthology of haiku and other Japanese poetry forms.


a lonely flower
my companion
for one night

A haiku with deeper meaning, but also a haiku with sweet memeories. Today I have written a revision of this one:


a lonely flower
my companion for one night -
deep silence


It makes this haiku stronger, more in balance I think. What do you think?

Haiku Heights #254, Moral

Inspired by the theme at

It's to long that I have posted here a new haiku (or two, or three ...), so tonight I thought "let me look at Haiku Heights" to see what their prompt is for this week. It turned out to be Moral, that's not an easy one. So I have given it some thought and came up with the next haiku:


honor your parents
don't let them feel sad about you -
family of swans

Fragile beauty

Fragile beauty, a few new cascading haiku.


Yesterday was a wonderful and sunny day here in The Netherlands and I could make a few wonderful photos in my backyard. Finally Spring has come, my Sakura is in full bloom and the Rhodondendron also. What a joy to see those fragile Cherry blossoms and the big flowers of the Rhodondendron. The greater part of my backyard is fallow and is waiting for new garden plans, but ... well ... it has to wait, because we will start first in our frontyard with planting new plants and flowers.

Back to yesterday. As I made a few photos of my Cherry Tree I saw a snail crawl between the young Cherry blossoms.

I had to write a haiku about this event (smiles). So here it goes.

between fragility
a snail seeking it's path to Heaven
slowly, so slowly

slowly, so slowly
a snail between young Cherry blossoms 
seeks it's path

seeks it's path
a snail moves to the top
between fragility


It's just a little wonder to see this in my own backyard. And it's even a greater wonder to have the courage to compose a haiku on this event.

It's worth a celebration to see the Sakura in full bloom after a long, cold and dark Winter. But as I hear the weather forecast for today I am so anxious to see that the fragile blossoms will be gone soon, because we get strong winds and heavy rains. I can imagine how the classic Japanese haiku poets had that same fear when the weather changed and gusts of wind will tear the Cherry Blossoms apart. I am praying that not all of the Cherry Blossoms will be gone after today.

with tears in my eyes
I see how the wind is ruining
fragile beauty

fragile beauty
a gust of wind tears apart

as young as they are
torn apart

fragile blossoms of the Sakura 
tears in my eyes


It's heartbreaking to see how the wind is tearing apart the fragile Sakura blossoms ... I was so happy to see that finally Spring has come and now ... that joy turned into sadness, but ... next Spring the Sakura blossoms will return and will bring happiness again.

Sharing haiku

I am hosting a daily haiku meme on Chèvrefeuille's Carpe Diem and today I was reading the post of several contributors to that daily haiku meme. I ran into a wonderful haiku on 'Capricorn' (The Sea Goat), as part of a series of prompts on the Zodiac, written by Cathy Tenzo of Haiku Plate Special. That haiku was the following:


Sitting at the bar,
the old goat dreams of the sea -
the waves whisper

Really a nice haiku. In my comment I gave my own haiku in reaction on the one by Cathy. I love to share that haiku (in a little other way) here with you all.

stories of far away places
to an old sailor

Isn't it a wonderful man? Look at that face ... you can see the story of his life. He must have had a hard life and many adventures don't you think? And he must have a thousand stories of far away places. Now he's to old to be on a ship sailing over the Seven Seas, but the waves whispering their stories into his ear.

Today our prompt in the A2Z Challenge of Haiku Heights is Candle so I have to write a haiku with that prompt. Hm ... that must be easy ... though I had the need for some time to compose this one.

souls climbing to Heaven

Haiku Heights April 2013 challenge, Ascent

Today the Haiku Heights April 2013 Challenge has started. It's a while ago that I posted a weblog-post for Haiku Heights, but today I will start again with posting for Haiku Heights. I hope to succeed, because my own daily haiku meme Carpe Diem will need my attention too.

The first prompt for this April Challenge of Haiku Heights is "Ascent", not an easy one, but I think I can write a haiku with it.


spiritual quest
leads me towards the mountains
ascension is near

ascension is near
finally I will become
enlightened

Well ... it wasn't an easy start, but I am glad that I succeeded. Hope to see you tomorrow again.

A Single Leaf, an Impromptu verse

I have written an Impromptu verse ... I saw a single leaf dancing through the streets. It's was a very stormy day today so the last leaves are blown away by that strong wind. But this one single leaf touched me. And I wrote the following haiku on that event:


one single leaf
dances on the shoulder of the wind -
prima ballerina


Isn't it a wonderful little gem? This haiku feels just good and strong. What do you think about this one?

Valley Stream

Today I love to share a weblog on a haiku by Onitsura (1660-1738) a haiku poet which is the haiku master for this month of Carpe Diem. Today we had a wonderful haiku written by him:

tani-mizu ya ishi mo utayomu yama-zakura


the wild cherry:
stones also are singing their songs
in the valley stream


This haiku by Onitsura is meant to be as a source for inspiration. So I was inspired and wrote this haiku:

gurggling valley stream
brings joy to the heart of Mother Nature -

Haiku Heights, Shimmer

It's a long time ago, February 1st, that I have posted here on my haiku-blog. I am to busy with my daily haiku meme Carpe Diem to write here on my first weblog about haiku. Today I ran into Haiku Heights the wonderful website on haiku writing hosted by Leo. This week's prompt is shimmer and I love to share the next haiku with you, my dear visitors:

shimmering bright
between colorful leaves
a pebble
